Prime Minister Carney to Attend Alberta Rallies Ahead of Referendum on Canadian Unity
📅 Today
Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend two rallies in Alberta promoting Canadian unity just before the province's referendum on potential separation from Canada.
OTTAWA — This week, Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to participate in two rallies organized under the banner of 'Forever Canadian' in Alberta, coinciding with the province's pivotal referendum. On October 19, Albertans will cast their votes on whether to remain a part of Canada or initiate a future separation referendum. In addition to this key question, there are nine other inquiries regarding constitutional and immigration matters on the ballot. The 'Forever Canadian' initiative, spearheaded by Thomas Lukaszuk, a former deputy premier of Alberta, aims to galvanize support for remaining within Canada. According to the campaign's official website, Carney has been invited to a rally in Calgary on October 15 and another in Edmonton on October 16. The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed his attendance at both events. 'We want the country’s leader to witness firsthand the collective spirit of Albertans from diverse backgrounds advocating for a united Canada,' the website states. Reflecting on Alberta's impending separation referendum, Carney, who has roots in Alberta, highlighted the significance of the decision in a Thanksgiving Day message. He emphasized that Canada is 'worth fighting for.' In a video message recorded at his former high school in Edmonton, Carney remarked, 'This year, Thanksgiving is a bit different. A week from today, Albertans will have the opportunity to make an important decision about their future: whether to remain part of Canada or begin a long and uncertain process through which Alberta could separate from Canada.' Carney also underscored the federal government's commitment to large-scale projects in Alberta, including a proposed new pipeline to the West Coast. He warned that achieving such ambitious goals is not feasible if the nation is fractured. 'You can’t build big things on fault lines,' he stated. Carney further asserted that Canadians are 'stronger together' as they confront challenges to their economy, security, and cultural identity. 'Generations of Albertans helped build this country. It’s yours, it’s ours, and it’s worth fighting for,' he declared. Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is also expected to deliver a speech in Calgary endorsing Canadian unity on Friday. His address will take place at the Canada Strong and Free Network conference on October 16, which will be followed by remarks from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
