David Carey has been appointed as the new CEO of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, bringing extensive experience in public space initiatives and community engagement.
In a significant development for the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPP), David Carey has been named the new CEO. Previously, Carey served as the co-executive director at The Bentway, where he played a crucial role in promoting one of Toronto's most innovative public space initiatives. His tenure at The Bentway involved close collaboration with a diverse range of partners, communities, and planners, focusing on reimagining urban connectivity and public spaces. In a statement regarding his new position, Carey expressed gratitude for the professional planners he collaborated with during his time at The Bentway. He noted, 'I had the great pleasure to work closely with many professional planners during my time at The Bentway and saw firsthand the incredible value and impact they bring to every table, every conversation and every undertaking.' Carey's admiration for the planning profession is evident as he highlights their shared values, such as the importance of public spaces, active transportation, vibrant landscapes, and community-oriented developments. He acknowledged that planners are imaginative yet methodical in their approach, building systems that benefit the public and strengthen both urban and rural areas throughout the province. Carey expressed his enthusiasm for joining OPPI, stating, 'I’m honoured to join this work and start a new chapter with OPPI.' The appointment of Carey comes at a pivotal time for the Institute, coinciding with the launch of its new Strategic Plan, ELEVATE 2030. Andria Leigh, the council chair of OPPI, emphasized the significance of Carey's leadership during this transition. She noted, 'David’s leadership comes at an important moment for the Institute and the profession, as OPPI launches our new Strategic Plan, ELEVATE 2030.
