The Canadian government is investing $430 million over the next five years to support the training of skilled trades workers through enhanced funding for unions and training providers.
OTTAWA — In a significant initiative aimed at bolstering the skilled trades workforce, the federal government has announced a plan to allocate $430 million over the next five years. This funding aims to assist unions in training a new generation of skilled workers. John Zerucelli, the secretary of state for labour, made the announcement on Thursday, detailing that the funding is primarily sourced from an expansion of the Union Training and Innovation Program, which was originally launched in 2017.According to a news release from the government, unions and training providers will soon have the opportunity to apply for additional funds to enhance their training facilities and infrastructure. The government has opened expressions of interest for these funds, with a deadline set for November 12. The initiative seeks shovel-ready projects that can commence by next spring, underscoring the urgency of expanding training capabilities in the trades.
In addition to the capital for facility expansion, the government is also accepting ongoing applications to help offset the costs of training equipment. Notably, the federal contribution towards this equipment is being temporarily increased to cover 70 percent of costs, up from the previous 50 percent. This measure is expected to significantly alleviate the financial burden on training organizations.
Furthermore, a third application stream has been introduced to fund innovative proposals from unions aimed at attracting, recruiting, and supporting trainees throughout their apprenticeship journeys. Organizations interested in this funding can submit proposals to the government by December 17.
This funding announcement is part of a broader commitment made by the Liberal government, which previously pledged $8 billion to recruit and train up to 100,000 new skilled trades workers over the next five years. The focus on skilled trades has intensified as the government pursues an ambitious infrastructure agenda.
Zerucelli emphasized the need for more workers to support the construction of homes, infrastructure, and major projects vital for economic growth. "That’s why we’re investing in apprenticeship training facilities, modern equipment, and new approaches to training, giving more Canadians the opportunity to learn a trade, develop their skills and build Canada’s future," he stated in a media release, reinforcing the government's commitment to enhancing the skilled trades sector.
