Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of $2.9 Billion Yellowhead Pipeline Project

Canadian Utilities celebrates the start of a significant pipeline project in Alberta, promising thousands of jobs and substantial economic impact.

CALGARY, ALTA. — A significant milestone was achieved recently as the leadership of Canadian Utilities, alongside government officials, Indigenous leaders, and industry representatives, gathered to commemorate the groundbreaking of the Yellowhead Pipeline, a project valued at $2.9 billion. This natural gas pipeline is anticipated to generate around 2,000 direct construction jobs, with projections indicating that it will support an additional 12,000 construction jobs and create approximately 20,000 permanent jobs annually once the associated downstream investments are operational.
The pipeline, stretching 235 kilometers, will connect Peers, Alberta, to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, and is designed to deliver an impressive 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas each day to the province’s industrial heartland. The groundbreaking ceremony follows the approval of the project by the Alberta Utilities Commission, which was announced in July. Since receiving this approval, pre-construction activities have been actively underway.
The expected completion date for the pipeline is set for late 2027. Jason Sharpe, Chief Operating Officer of ATCO Energy Systems, emphasized the significance of the Yellowhead Pipeline by stating, “As the largest project in our company’s history, Yellowhead represents more than a pipeline. It’s an opportunity to create jobs, strengthen communities, enable economic growth, and build lasting value for future generations.”
Sharpe further highlighted the collaborative effort involved, crediting the project’s success to the support received from industry partners, suppliers, contractors, Indigenous partners, and community leaders. This initiative not only underscores the potential for job creation but also represents a strategic investment in Alberta’s energy infrastructure, aligning with the province's broader economic objectives.
