PCL Construction to Build Maintenance and Storage Facility for Calgary's Green Line LRT

PCL Construction has been awarded a contract for the Maintenance and Storage Facility for the Green Line LRT project in Calgary, with construction already underway.

CALGARY, ALTA. — PCL Construction has secured one of two contracts for the Green Line LRT – SE Project, which is set to enhance the construction of a significant Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF). This facility will play a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the Green Line by providing essential services such as the storage, maintenance, and preparation of light rail vehicles, according to a recent press release. The MSF will encompass approximately 26,000 square meters across a 2.25-hectare site.
PCL's responsibilities within this project include site grading, the installation of underground utilities, and the construction of building foundations. This foundational work is critical as it will lay the groundwork for the maintenance shop, train storage building, and various operational and administrative spaces associated with the facility. The scope of work also involves site stripping and rough grading over the building footprint and adjacent areas, alongside the construction of drainage infrastructure and retaining walls. Additionally, the project will see the installation of underground services and duct banks, as well as measures to protect existing utilities.
The foundation phase will consist of subgrade preparation, cast-in-place concrete, and the integration of embedded mechanical and electrical components, including anchor bolts that will support future structural systems, the release adds. Construction activities commenced in late May and are progressing well, with an expected completion timeline later this year.
In a related development, Supreme Steel LP was awarded a contract in June to provide the structural steel that will create the primary framework for the three buildings within the MSF. Notably, Supreme Steel has previously served as the lead fabricator and erector for prominent projects, including the Calgary Bow Tower. Their work on this project is scheduled to begin this month, with offsite fabrication planned for late summer. The installation of the steel framework is anticipated to start next year.
Upon completion, the Maintenance and Storage Facility will serve as an integrated operations hub for the Green Line, featuring a three-level maintenance shop, light rail vehicle storage tracks and service lanes, a train wash and interior cleaning facility, a body shop dedicated to exterior and interior repairs, component repair shops, parts storage, and administrative and operational office spaces.
