Celebration Marks Opening of Rankin Inlet Air Terminal and Major Funding Announcement

Officials announced $85.5 million in federal funding for the rehabilitation of Rankin Inlet Airfield following the terminal's grand opening.

Rankin Inlet recently witnessed a significant event as government officials from various levels gathered to commemorate the grand opening of the new air terminal building. This celebration was notably enhanced by the announcement of an $85.5 million funding allocation from the Arctic Infrastructure Fund (AIF), aimed at facilitating the Rankin Inlet Airfield Rehabilitation Project. This funding is a continuation of earlier investments from the National Trade Corridors Fund, which contributed to the construction of the terminal building itself. The new financial support will focus on a comprehensive rehabilitation of the airport's runway, which is considered a vital conduit for northern communities. According to an official release, the airport is crucial for transporting passengers, cargo, and essential supplies, including food and medical equipment. The funding from AIF complements the Department of National Defence’s earlier commitment to the runway's rehabilitation, a commitment reiterated by Prime Minister Carney earlier this year. The allocated funds will be directed towards several key enhancements: improving the safety, reliability, and capacity of the airport’s runway, taxiways, and apron systems serving the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut; rehabilitating roughly 141,000 square meters of airfield pavement, which includes Runway 13/31, Taxiways A and C, and related apron surfaces; and extending the airfield's operational lifespan by 15 to 20 years, which will help minimize long-term maintenance requirements.
