Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre Expands Cardiac and Mental Health Services

The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre is set to enhance its cardiac and mental health services, enabling local procedures to be performed in Barrie, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign.

The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), serving the Barrie and Simcoe Muskoka region, is poised to significantly enhance its healthcare offerings. Currently, patients requiring cardiac surgeries, such as stent placements and bypass operations, are transferred to South Lake Hospital in Newmarket for these critical procedures. However, within the next two years, RVH plans to facilitate these surgeries locally in Barrie, making access to cardiac care more convenient for the community.
In addition to its cardiac services, RVH is home to the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre, which underscores the hospital's ongoing need for funding to support both equipment upgrades and training for healthcare staff. The hospital has recently acquired state-of-the-art equipment, which has been instrumental in attracting and retaining skilled physicians specializing in advanced cardiac and cancer treatments.
In May 2015, RVH launched the “Hearts and Minds” campaign, aimed at garnering support from the North Simcoe Muskoka community. This initiative sought to establish a dedicated cardiac care center at RVH, as well as a youth mental health center, while also enhancing services for women’s cancer treatments, educational programs, and the acquisition of new medical equipment.
The campaign has been remarkably successful, surpassing its initial fundraising goal of $25 million. Notably, the campaign received a generous $10,000 donation from CCTA, contributing to the overall success of this vital initiative. Thanks to the funds raised, RVH opened the regional Child and Youth Mental Health unit in December 2017, followed by the Cardiac-Intervention Unit in January 2018.
The expansion of these services is a significant milestone for RVH and the surrounding community, as it ensures that residents will have access to essential cardiac care and mental health services right in their own region. The ongoing support and contributions from the community continue to play a crucial role in enhancing healthcare services at RVH, making it a cornerstone of health and wellness in the area. The successful rollout of these units reflects the hospital's commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of its patients, ultimately improving health outcomes in Barrie and beyond.
