📅 Today
Construction begins on a new cancer patient lodge in Saskatoon, with significant funding from provincial and federal governments as well as local foundations.
In a significant development for healthcare in Saskatchewan, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) recently celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Saskatoon Cancer Patient Lodge. This new facility, located at 1036 College Dr. in Saskatoon, is set to provide essential support for cancer patients undergoing treatment at nearby healthcare institutions. The project is backed by substantial financial contributions, with the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada each committing over $7 million through the Build Communities Strong Fund, while the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan adds $10 million to the funding pool. This collaborative funding effort highlights the importance of community and governmental support in enhancing healthcare facilities.
Westridge Construction has been awarded the contract for this important project and has commenced site preparations. The new lodge is designed to serve as a “home-away-from-home” for patients, featuring 33 private patient rooms, including three suites specifically for stem cell transplant recipients. Additionally, the facility will include 14 accommodation spaces for companions, a kitchen, lounge areas, a reflection room that can host Indigenous ceremonies, common areas for games and puzzles, and an exercise room equipped with light fitness equipment.
The construction comes after the demolition of the former lodge, which was built in 1928. The new facility will be conveniently located near the Royal University Hospital and the Saskatoon Cancer Center, ensuring that patients have easy access to treatment.
While the new lodge is under construction, temporary services will continue to be offered to patients, ensuring that their needs are met during the transition period. The project is anticipated to be completed by spring 2028, marking a significant milestone in improving patient care and support in the region.
As this project progresses, it reflects the ongoing commitment of the Saskatchewan government and associated organizations to enhance healthcare infrastructure and patient services within the province. The Saskatoon Cancer Patient Lodge is expected to play a vital role in the lives of many patients and their families as they navigate the challenges of cancer treatment.
