Toronto Fire Services Promotes Fire Safety During Fire Prevention Week 2026

Toronto Fire Services emphasizes fire safety during Fire Prevention Week 2026, highlighting safe charging practices for lithium-ion batteries.

In a proactive move to enhance community safety, Toronto Fire Services is urging residents to prioritize fire safety during Fire Prevention Week 2026, which runs from Sunday, October 4, to Saturday, October 10. This year's theme, "Safe Charging Is a Superpower," underscores the importance of adopting simple charging habits that can significantly reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires, a growing concern as these batteries power numerous everyday devices such as smartphones, tablets, e-bikes, and e-scooters.
Lithium-ion batteries are generally safe when handled correctly; however, they can present a severe fire hazard if they are damaged, defective, or improperly charged. To mitigate these risks, Toronto Fire Services has outlined several essential safety recommendations for residents. These include using only the battery, charger, and charging cord that are either provided or approved by the device manufacturer, as well as adhering strictly to the manufacturer’s guidelines regarding usage, charging, and storage.
Additionally, residents are advised to replace any batteries, devices, or charging equipment that show signs of damage, such as swelling, leaking, or overheating. It is also crucial to charge devices on a hard, flat surface, away from any combustible materials, and to unplug devices once they are fully charged. Fire Services emphasizes the importance of never charging devices while sleeping or when away from home, as well as avoiding any modifications or tampering with batteries or charging equipment.
Fire Prevention Week serves as an invaluable opportunity for residents to learn about simple actions that can prevent fires and enhance safety in their homes, workplaces, and communities. For further details on fire safety and the specific measures related to lithium-ion battery safety, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Toronto’s Public & Community Safety webpage.
In a statement regarding the initiative, Jim Jessop, Fire Chief of Toronto Fire Services, remarked, "Safe charging starts with using approved equipment and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Always use approved chargers, cords, and batteries; never tamper with or modify devices, and replace any battery or charging equipment that is damaged or defective. These simple steps can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires and keep our families and communities safer."
Toronto, a city of over three million residents, boasts a rich diversity that contributes to its status as Canada’s leading economic engine and one of the most vibrant and livable cities worldwide. As the fourth largest city in North America, it ranks highly in various international categories due to the investments made by its government, residents, and businesses.
