VRCA Advocates for Construction Advisory Committees in Lower Mainland

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association is urging Lower Mainland municipalities to establish construction advisory committees to enhance collaboration between builders and municipal staff.

In Vancouver, the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) is making a significant push as municipal and provincial election campaigns unfold concurrently. The association is urging municipalities in the Lower Mainland to form construction advisory committees. This initiative aims to create a regular forum where municipal staff and industry representatives can come together to identify workflow bottlenecks, enhance processes, and ensure that projects are progressing in a timely manner.
Jeannine Martin, president of the VRCA, emphasized the importance of such committees, stating, "Everyone wants to be photographed with a shovel. The harder work happens long before the shovel comes out." She pointed out that builders possess valuable insights regarding where municipal processes may falter, where requirements can be ambiguous, and how minor adjustments could potentially save weeks in project timelines. According to Martin, the establishment of a standing forum is essential for these conversations to take place and for actionable solutions to be developed.
The proposed committees would bring together those responsible for delivering construction projects with those who approve them, focusing on practical improvements. These improvements could include clearer permit requirements, more predictable review timelines, enhanced coordination between municipal departments, and measurable progress in addressing recurring delays.
Scott Adkins, chair of the VRCA, echoed this sentiment, stating, "This is a straightforward ask for every municipal candidate: Will you engage with the people and businesses that build your communities?" He stressed that a construction advisory committee would provide a consistent platform for municipalities and builders to collaboratively identify obstacles and propose effective solutions to ensure project advancement.
The call for these advisory committees is part of VRCA's broader Build Lower Mainland campaign, which consists of three pillars: Time to Build, Cost to Build, and People to Build. It is crucial to note that this campaign is non-partisan and does not endorse any candidates or political parties.
As the elections approach, the VRCA is also encouraging candidates to put forth credible plans aimed at facilitating the construction of projects in the region. The association is advocating for a more cooperative approach to building processes, emphasizing that effective communication and collaboration can lead to more efficient project completions.
