EDMONTON — In 2026, Alberta faced significant weather challenges, yet the province's flood resilience projects have effectively safeguarded residents from river flooding and mitigated flood-related damages, according to a government release. The province experienced multiple heavy rainfall events, some of which were historic in nature, along with a complicated spring ice breakup on northern rivers. Alberta's comprehensive flood mitigation strategy has played a crucial role in preventing substantial harm to homes, businesses, and vital infrastructure. This initiative is part of the $125-million Drought and Flood Protection Program, which was launched in 2024. The government noted that since the devastating floods in southern Alberta in 2013, there has been a marked improvement in the tools and information available to government officials, local emergency managers, and residents to address rising water levels and flooding effectively. The province has also increased storage capacity to manage peak flows and has strategically positioned flood barriers to shield vulnerable regions. In Calgary, the Springbank Off-stream Reservoir was utilized for the first time to manage high flows from the Elbow River upstream of the city. Updated flood maps indicate a significantly reduced flood risk along the Elbow River, a direct result of the Springbank project and other mitigation efforts. Similarly, on the Bow River, the Ghost Reservoir has been deployed multiple times to lower river flow through Calgary. In Canmore, the Cougar Creek Dam, a structure designed to retain mountain debris floods, benefited from approximately $46 million in provincial funding, successfully capturing debris and excess water to lessen the impact of high flow events. Additional debris mitigation structures on nearby Exshaw Creek, Heart Creek, and Jura Creek were also activated in response to the severe weather. In Fort McMurray, the community has benefited from updated flood mapping, which includes specific assessments for ice jams, aiding the response to a challenging ice breakup on the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers this spring. A $661,000 investment in enhanced flood mapping has better prepared the community for potential flooding scenarios reminiscent of those in 1997, which caused extensive damage under similar water levels. Currently, Alberta is advancing its flood mapping efforts, with 850 kilometres of mapping already in progress as part of a broader goal to achieve 3,000 kilometres of new or updated mapping by 2028. Moreover, several flood mitigation projects are either in design or under construction, including: • $34.3 million for the Horsefly spillway in the Municipal District of Taber • $5.25 million for flood protection for the Rossdale and E.L. Smith water treatment plants in Edmonton • $2.87 million allocated to tackle overland flooding in Sexsmith • $3.25 million for a flood protection initiative at the wastewater treatment plant in Medicine Hat • $4.07 million dedicated to the Stafford Lake stormwater infrastructure and monitoring project in Brooks.
