The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre has received the prestigious 2026 Wayne McLellan Award of Excellence in Healthcare Facilities Management, recognizing its energy management achievements and sustainable practices.

The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre (BLCOC) has recently been honored with the esteemed 2026 Wayne McLellan Award of Excellence in Healthcare Facilities Management. This award, which is conferred by the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society, acknowledges exceptional accomplishments in the management of healthcare facilities, particularly in areas such as energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence. The BLCOC project was delivered by EllisDon and is maintained by EllisDon Facilities Services (EDFS).
The recognition stems from a collaborative energy management program spearheaded by Nova Scotia Health in partnership with EDFS. Following the project's Substantial Completion phase, the involved teams focused on optimizing building operations through a systematic approach that included continuous monitoring, advanced analytics, and targeted improvements to the existing systems.
A notable achievement of this initiative is its approximate 70 percent reduction in natural gas consumption, which has significantly lowered greenhouse gas emissions. This reduction was accomplished while upholding the critical standards for ventilation, indoor air quality, comfort, and reliability that are essential in a healthcare setting.
Central to the success of this program was the implementation of advanced fault detection and diagnostics (FD&D) software, which was integrated with the facility's building automation system. This data-driven methodology enabled the team to uncover hidden inefficiencies, prioritize necessary corrective actions, and foster ongoing enhancements in building performance.
The award-winning efforts underscore the importance of long-term facility stewardship in healthcare. By merging operational expertise with a robust data-driven strategy, EDFS has successfully transformed sustainability aspirations into quantifiable outcomes, thereby reducing emissions and bolstering overall building performance—all while adhering to the high standards mandated in healthcare environments.
