VANCOUVER — The expansion of BC Hydro’s Mount Pleasant substation, with a budget of $90 million, is set to advance significantly, allowing capacity to increase for an additional 50,000 customers. A recent announcement detailed that the undertaking will include the installation of a third transformer along with other essential electrical equipment. This new transformer is anticipated to arrive in early September, marking a significant milestone in the project timeline. The release states, "The new transformer will be installed in an empty bay that was built for future use." Additionally, the project will feature further upgrades to the electrical infrastructure aimed at enhancing long-term reliability and accommodating future growth in demand for electricity. Substations play a crucial role in converting high-voltage transmission power into lower-voltage electricity, making it safe for distribution to residential and commercial properties. The majority of construction activities are expected to take place within the existing substation footprint, which will help to minimize disruptions for nearby residents and businesses. Completion of the Mount Pleasant project is targeted for early 2029. This initiative is part of BC Hydro's larger investment strategy aimed at modernizing Vancouver’s electrical system. Other significant projects in progress include the Mainwaring Substation modernization, which is a comprehensive upgrade of a facility that has been operational for 70 years, designed to enhance reliability for over 60,000 homes and businesses. The West End Substation project is focused on replacing the aging Dal Grauer Substation to ensure dependable service for around 50,000 customers in downtown Vancouver. Furthermore, the East Vancouver Substation project aims to replace the nearly 80-year-old Murrin Substation with a contemporary facility.
