Dynamic Testing Commences on Broadway Subway Project in Vancouver

The Province of British Columbia has initiated dynamic testing on the Broadway Subway Project, marking a significant milestone as SkyTrain vehicles make their inaugural runs on the new extension. This development is crucial as it paves the way towards the anticipated public opening set for fall 2027. The Broadway Subway Project, with an estimated cost of approximately $2.9 billion, encompasses a 5.7-kilometre extension of the Millennium Line, stretching from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus.
The new subway line will incorporate six underground stations, including a vital direct connection to the Canada Line at Cambie Street. The province has emphasized that dynamic testing is essential for verifying the safe integration of trains, tracks, signals, and communication systems. During this phase, various tests will be conducted to ensure that trains maintain safe clearances, are accurately positioned, and that signal operations are functioning effectively. Additionally, the testing will assess the simultaneous operation of multiple trains on the tracks.
Initially, driver-operated trains will be utilized for testing before transitioning to automatic train control systems, as detailed in the province's release. This testing phase will be carried out in stages throughout 2027, commencing at VCC-Clark Station and progressing westward toward Arbutus Street. Concurrently, track installation continues during this testing phase.
Crews are also focused on installing the necessary electrical and mechanical systems within the stations that will power and operate the SkyTrain extension. As the project approaches its opening day, the province has noted that a comprehensive system test will be conducted under real-world conditions, referred to as trial running. During this period, trains will operate throughout the day at regular frequencies, stopping at each of the six new stations, simulating the service that will be available once the Broadway Subway extension is fully operational.
