BWXT Canada to Build Canada's First Transportable Nuclear Power Plant in New Brunswick

BWXT Canada has been chosen to create and implement Canada's inaugural Transportable Nuclear Power Plant in Belledune, N.B., promising significant job creation and clean energy solutions.

In a significant move for Canada's energy sector, Ontario-based BWXT Canada has been awarded the contract to fabricate and deploy the nation's first Transportable Nuclear Power Plant (TNPP). This innovative project will utilize BWXT's Advanced Nuclear Reactor (BANR) technology and is set to take place in Belledune, New Brunswick. The TNPP is designed as a 50-megawatt (MW) pilot project that aims to provide baseload power capable of serving up to 40,000 homes.
The initiative is expected to generate over 150 jobs during its development phase, with around 40 long-term positions anticipated once the plant becomes operational. This development is spearheaded by Prodigy Clean Energy, which emphasizes a novel approach to nuclear energy deployment in Canada. Unlike traditional plants, the TNPPs are engineered to be constructed off-site and then transported to locations where electricity is needed.
According to the announcement, the integration of small modular reactors and microreactors into transportable power plants could revolutionize the delivery of reliable, clean nuclear energy to various locations, including remote and northern communities, Indigenous communities, and both industrial and grid-connected sites.
The project has been established under a collaborative agreement with the Pabineau First Nation and the Eel River Bar First Nation, marking a pivotal step towards creating a First Nations-owned commercial power generation facility. Additionally, the initiative will include the development of an energy innovation campus, which will serve as a centralized hub for operations, maintenance, and workforce training. This campus aims to support a future fleet of TNPPs that will cater to the energy needs of northern and remote communities.
Furthermore, an Indigenous Energy Innovation Visitor Centre is planned to be part of this project, promoting education and engagement regarding the new energy technologies being implemented. The TNPP pilot project not only reflects advancements in nuclear technology but also underscores a commitment to Indigenous partnership and sustainable energy solutions.
