Calgary Housing Launches Ambitious Southview Development Project

Calgary Housing has initiated its largest development project to date, the SouthviewRFP Construction Manager – Southview project, which will provide over 1,000 housing units in Calgary.

In a significant move for the local housing landscape, Calgary Housing has officially commenced work on the largest development project in its history, dubbed the SouthviewRFP Construction Manager – Southview Project. Located at 1820 33 St SE in Calgary, this expansive multi-phase initiative is set to accommodate more than 1,000 residents upon completion. The first phase will introduce a mid-rise structure featuring 250 homes, offering a diverse mix of one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom layouts tailored to the needs of over 600 Calgarians. Notably, 10 percent of these units are designed to be barrier-free, ensuring accessibility for all. Furthermore, the buildings are set to surpass the standards outlined in the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, reflecting a strong commitment to energy efficiency.
The Calgary city council has already approved a substantial capital investment of $31.2 million for this development in the previous November, with additional funding being sourced from both federal and provincial governments. The project is not just about housing; it also includes innovative features such as built-in live-work units and co-working spaces, catering to modern living needs. Residents will enjoy a variety of amenities, including a dedicated lounge, a rooftop patio, secure bike storage, and beautifully landscaped surroundings.
Importantly, the Southview development will be integrated into Calgary Housing's mixed-income housing portfolio, providing a broad range of rental options to meet varying affordability levels. This project is particularly significant as it will replace previous provincial social housing, thereby reinstating affordable housing in an area located just off International Avenue (17 Avenue S.E.).
Construction for the first phase is anticipated to conclude in the first quarter of 2028, with residents expected to start moving in shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, planning for the second phase is currently underway, promising further enhancements to the community’s housing options. As Calgary Housing embarks on this ambitious project, it sets a precedent for future developments aimed at addressing the critical need for affordable housing in the region.
