Calgary, Rocky View County and Canada Infrastructure Bank Sign MOU to Propel Prairie Economic Gateway Project

The City of Calgary, Rocky View County and the Canada Infrastructure Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate the development of the Prairie Economic Gateway, a trade and logistics hub aimed at enhancing supply chain reliability and fostering economic growth.

In a significant step toward enhancing trade infrastructure in Alberta, the City of Calgary, Rocky View County, and the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at advancing the Prairie Economic Gateway project. This agreement, as outlined in a recent release, marks a pivotal move to transition from the engineering design phase to active construction of the proposed trade and logistics hub situated in the Calgary region.
The MOU sets the groundwork for collaborative efforts among the three entities to evaluate the commercial, technical, and financial viability of the public off-site infrastructure necessary for future development. Following this agreement, a more detailed due diligence phase will commence, focusing on critical aspects of infrastructure, financing, and delivery that must be addressed before any construction decisions can be finalized.
The Prairie Economic Gateway is conceptualized as a rail-anchored logistics hub that will be strategically located east of Calgary in Rocky View County along the CPKC mainline. This initiative, spearheaded by the City of Calgary and Rocky View County, is supported by private-sector rail and development partners. It aims to enhance trade-enabling infrastructure capacity, alleviate first-mile and last-mile challenges, and bolster economic benefits derived from increased trade. Additionally, the project is designed to improve the reliability and resilience of supply chains while promoting diversification in trade.
The Calgary Construction Association (CCA) has expressed strong support for this MOU, emphasizing its importance as a crucial advancement for the region. According to a statement from the CCA, the gateway represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reinforce Calgary's status as a pivotal hub for trade, logistics, manufacturing, distribution, and industrial development. The association highlighted that the project is instrumental in facilitating the infrastructure necessary to attract private investment and generate long-term economic activity.
Moreover, the CCA noted that the gateway would provide a sustained pipeline of work for its members over the next decade, thereby solidifying Alberta's role in both national and international supply chains.
