Canada and Ontario Launch $8.7 Billion Initiative to Support Tariff-Affected Industries

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a significant investment plan aimed at bolstering industries in the province impacted by tariffs, with a focus on manufacturing and key sectors like steel and automotive.

OTTAWA — On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford, revealed a substantial $8.7-billion initiative on Parliament Hill aimed at supporting industries in Ontario that have been adversely affected by ongoing tariffs resulting from the trade war. Premier Ford described the initiative as 'transformative,' underscoring its primary objective of safeguarding manufacturing across various sectors.
Central to this new plan is the establishment of a 'joint steel action fund,' which will allocate $3.5 billion from the federal government and $1.7 billion from Ontario over a five-year period. This funding is intended to assist steel manufacturers in diversifying their product offerings. Alongside this financial support, the initiative includes a commitment to enhance protections against foreign steel dumping, which will be achieved through stronger border enforcement and additional regulatory measures.
The comprehensive strategy also encompasses a $2.5 billion investment for the automotive industry, with the federal government contributing $1.5 billion to this effort. Moreover, an additional $1 billion is earmarked for the development of the Ring of Fire mining project in northern Ontario, which will focus on infrastructure improvements, including road construction.
The announcement comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war, which has been ongoing for over a year and a half and has negatively impacted critical Canadian sectors such as automotive and steel manufacturing. In light of these challenges, Carney mentioned that he had a lengthy discussion with Trump earlier in the day, reiterating Canada’s readiness to engage in negotiations with the U.S. administration whenever they are prepared to do so.
