Currently, a temporary bridge is being utilized by construction crews while the pier caps for the new structure have been completed.The Zanardi Rapids Bridge will span 1,600 feet and is designed as a crucial element within a broader initiative aimed at improving rail capacity at the Port of Prince Rupert. This area, which includes the entrance to both the Port and the City of Prince Rupert, is identified as a natural bottleneck for rail operations.
The new bridge will significantly expand capacity on this vital rail link, with plans to extend several miles of track in both directions. It will connect to a new three-track bridge, thereby accommodating the increasing demand for rail transport in the region. Key features of the project include the construction of a new double-track bridge over the Zanardi Rapids, the rehabilitation of the existing single-track Zanardi Bridge, and the expansion of the causeway linking the Zanardi Bridge to Ridley Island.
Currently, the existing Zanardi Bridge can manage a maximum of 24 trains per day. The enhancements provided by the Zanardi Bridge Project are expected to not only expand this capacity but also to “future-proof the entire corridor for decades ahead,” according to CN.
