The Canadian Real Estate Association emphasizes the importance of transparency, accuracy, and accountability in the adoption of AI by REALTORS®, ensuring that consumer trust is maintained.
The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) has underscored the necessity for transparency, accuracy, and accountability in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) within the real estate sector. These core values are crucial for REALTORS® to earn and sustain consumer trust and confidence. Janice Myers, the CEO of CREA, stated, "Innovation must be balanced with responsibility. Transparency, accuracy, and accountability are essential principles that build consumer trust and support informed decision-making. CREA is focused on helping REALTORS® confidently adopt AI in ways that align with the high professional standards Canadians expect."CREA emphasizes the importance of ensuring that both consumers and REALTORS® are aware of when AI is significantly influencing information, communications, or representations. The association asserts that maintaining accuracy, clarity, and transparency is vital for informed decision-making and for sustaining confidence in real estate transactions.
The integration of AI does not diminish the professional responsibilities of REALTORS®. They remain fully accountable for the information, advice, and services they offer to their clients. These obligations are already encapsulated in the REALTOR® Code, particularly in Article 13 concerning Advertising: Content and Accuracy, and Article 15, which addresses Advertising Claims.
Utilizing AI responsibly can enhance efficiency, provide valuable insights, and improve service delivery while maintaining the transparency and accountability that Canadians expect from their REALTORS®. These principles support responsible innovation, aiding members in recognizing emerging opportunities and potential risks associated with AI.
CREA Chair Garry Bhaura remarked, "Technology has always played an important role in helping REALTORS® better serve their clients, and AI presents new opportunities to improve efficiency and access to information. At the same time, the human expertise, professional judgment, and accountability that REALTORS® provide remain essential to maintaining consumer confidence and the high standards Canadians expect."
As a member-focused organization, CREA is dedicated to collaborating with boards, associations, industry partners, and the REALTOR.ca team to foster a proactive approach to AI that upholds the pillars of transparency, accountability, and consumer trust. To this end, CREA is in the process of developing resources and best practices aimed at assisting REALTORS® in confidently and responsibly integrating AI into their professional practices.
