Englobe UK: A New Era of Growth and Challenges in Ground Engineering

Englobe UK, a subsidiary of the Canadian firm Englobe, is consolidating its operations while addressing industry challenges, particularly in skills shortages and gender representation.

Englobe UK, a prominent player in the environmental and geotechnical sector, is poised for further expansion into the ground engineering market, as articulated by managing director Julia Roberts. The company, which has a history in the UK dating back to the 1990s, recently rebranded after fully integrating its UK subsidiaries, Celtic and Biogenie, under the Englobe banner at the beginning of this year. This strategic move aims to streamline operations and present a unified brand to clients.
Roberts, who has been with the company since its acquisition of Celtic in 2008, emphasizes Englobe UK's resilience, having successfully navigated various economic downturns over the past three decades. The firm specializes in managing contaminated land and groundwater, particularly in the context of gasworks sites. It has established a joint venture with Biffa Waste, facilitating soil treatment at five landfill sites, which allows for the recycling of contaminated soils into restoration projects, thereby reducing landfill waste.
Englobe UK's clientele includes significant players such as the National Grid, with whom they have maintained a working relationship for over 25 years, alongside projects in the oil and chemical industries and various development ventures. Notable projects include their involvement in the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station, where they executed dewatering operations, and ongoing work on the High Speed 2 rail project as well as the Newcastle Gateshead Quays scheme.
The consolidation of the UK subsidiaries is not expected to alter management structures; current projects will continue under the same leadership teams. Roberts notes that integrating the two entities under a single name simplifies operations and strengthens the brand's market presence. With this consolidation complete, she aims to focus on strategic initiatives and expand Englobe's footprint in the UK by pursuing larger projects and enhancing the range of ground engineering services offered.
However, Roberts acknowledges the challenge posed by the ongoing skills shortage in the industry. She highlights the need for attracting new talent, particularly from underrepresented groups such as women and minorities, to ensure the company's growth and maintain service quality. Despite a gradual shift towards inclusivity in engineering, Roberts points out that more must be done to accommodate returning employees, especially women after maternity leave, to prevent a 'leaky pipeline' in the workforce.
Roberts advocates for organizations to implement family-friendly policies and flexible work arrangements, which could help retain talent within the sector. She reflects on her own experiences, aiming to serve as a role model for women in the industry and demonstrating that it is possible to balance family responsibilities with a successful career in engineering.
The managing director also touches on the potential benefits of digitalization, which could lead to increased efficiency and sustainability in operations, aligning with the industry's green agenda. Despite the challenges facing the sector, Roberts expresses optimism about Englobe's future. The company is actively pursuing growth opportunities while navigating the complexities of the engineering landscape, marking an exciting chapter for Englobe UK in the ever-evolving construction industry.
