The Canadian government is investing significantly in training skilled workers to address workforce gaps in critical sectors, with a focus on infrastructure development.
OTTAWA — In a significant move to bolster Canada's workforce, the federal government has unveiled plans to allocate hundreds of millions of dollars towards training skilled workers across the country. Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu made the announcement in Thunder Bay, her home riding, revealing a funding initiative of up to $258.6 million over the next five years, which includes an annual budget of $50 million for subsequent years. This initiative is part of a broader strategy initiated by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who announced the establishment of the Sectoral Workforce Innovation Fund just over a year ago. The fund aims to bridge the gap between the skills possessed by workers and the requirements set by industries, particularly within critical sectors such as energy and critical minerals. The government opened applications for this program in August, signaling its commitment to enhancing workforce capabilities in alignment with industry needs. Hajdu’s announcement follows a previous declaration from Ottawa regarding $430 million designated to assist unions and organizations in covering expenses related to new training facilities and equipment. The Liberal government has committed to investing billions over the next five years to train up to 100,000 new skilled workers, supporting its ambitious infrastructure agenda. This initiative underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing the skills shortage in Canada and ensuring that the workforce is well-equipped to meet the demands of evolving industries.
