Hitachi Energy Unveils $479 Million Transformer Insulation Factory Project in London, Ontario

Hitachi Energy, in collaboration with the federal and Ontario governments, has announced a significant investment to construct a new transformer insulation facility in London, Ontario, aimed at meeting the surging electricity demand.

In London, Ontario, Hitachi Energy has announced a substantial investment plan totaling $479 million to establish a new factory dedicated to transformer insulation production. This facility, spanning 21,000 square meters, is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2028. Notably, this will mark the first production of pressboard in Canada, a crucial material derived from paper pulp that plays an essential role in maintaining the cooling of transformers. Additionally, this factory will represent Hitachi Energy's inaugural manufacturing site for this product in the Americas.
The financial burden of this project predominantly falls on Hitachi Energy, with the federal and Ontario governments contributing a combined total of $50 million. This funding is structured as follows: $20 million sourced from the federal strategic response fund, $10 million from Natural Resources Canada, and up to $20 million from the Invest Ontario Fund.
The impetus behind this investment stems from an anticipated surge in electricity demand, driven by several factors including the transition to renewable energy sources, industrial advancements, and a significant increase in the number of artificial intelligence data centers. Bruno Melles, the chief executive of Hitachi's transformers division based in Zurich, emphasized the rapid growth of the transformer manufacturing sector, while noting that not all components are keeping pace with this demand. Melles stated, "Today we are in a situation where the industry for transformer manufacturing is going at a very high speed, but not all the industrial parts are going at the same speed. This is why we want to give a strong message to the market and say, ‘We want to be an integral part of the supply chain resilience and we are going to invest in order to ensure that the market is not going to have any shortage.'"
During the announcement, Carla Vincente, managing director of Hitachi Energy's Canadian division, highlighted the unprecedented growth in electricity demand across Canada. She remarked, "Electricity demand in Canada is growing at an unprecedented pace, something we’ve never seen before. By ensuring that we have this factory operational by the end of 2028, we will be able to respond to the higher needs and demand for the transformers that are an essential part of anything that we want to do to be able to electrify."
This initiative aligns with the broader objectives set forth by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently unveiled Canada’s new electricity strategy, which aims to double the country’s electricity grid capacity by 2050. The focus on building new infrastructure has become a pivotal aspect of Carney’s government strategy, with numerous power and transmission projects currently referred to the major projects office for expedited review. The establishment of this factory is expected to create approximately 100 permanent skilled jobs, further bolstering the local economy in London, Ontario.
