Joint Investment of Over $74 Million to Enhance Infrastructure in Saskatchewan

A collaborative funding initiative exceeding $74 million from federal and provincial governments aims to improve community infrastructure across Saskatchewan, focusing on several key projects.

In a significant move to enhance community infrastructure across Saskatchewan, a joint investment of over $74 million has been announced by both the federal and provincial governments. This funding will primarily support phase one of the City of Yorkton’s Water Pollution Control Plant Renewal Project, which includes essential upgrades to the H.M. Bailey Water Pollution Control Plant’s Headworks facility. According to a release, these improvements will not only increase treatment capacity but also enhance downstream quality and environmental outcomes. The project is designed to protect the cleanliness of Yorkton Creek and benefit users of the Assiniboine Watershed, which includes Cote First Nation, Keesekoose First Nation, and the City of Brandon in Manitoba.
The implications of the project extend beyond environmental protection; it is expected to foster future housing and economic growth in Yorkton. Specifically, the upgrades are anticipated to facilitate the potential development of approximately 7,150 additional housing units in the area. Furthermore, the existing sanitary sewer system along Bedford Drive and Louis Road in the Town of La Ronge will be extended to support the construction of two residential apartment buildings, which will contribute about 124 new housing units through the installation of 860 metres of sewer main that connects the sites to a nearby sewage pumping station.
In addition to Yorkton, several other towns and cities will benefit from this funding. Water treatment upgrades are slated for Shellbrook and Arcola, while Estevan will see an expansion of its wastewater facilities. Swift Current will undergo water system improvements, and Big River will experience both water and sewer expansions. Other noteworthy projects include the development of an infrastructure master plan for Naicam, flood mitigation and drainage enhancements in Warman, and lagoon expansion in the Rural Municipality of St. Louis No. 431.
The financial breakdown of the investment reveals that the federal government is contributing approximately $40.1 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, with the Government of Saskatchewan adding $33.4 million. Additionally, municipal recipients are collectively contributing $26.3 million towards the respective projects. Beyond this, the federal government is providing an extra $490,057 through the Canada Community-Building Fund to further support these initiatives.
