The Rising Appeal of Roofing Careers Among Youth in BC

The increasing interest in skilled trades among young people in British Columbia is highlighted by the Roofing Contractors Association's training programs, which prepare apprentices for promising careers in roofing and sheet metal work.

The landscape of skilled trades in British Columbia is experiencing a significant transformation, driven by evolving public perceptions and a notable rise in youth unemployment. This shift, coupled with substantial federal investment programs, has sparked a growing interest among young individuals in pursuing careers in the skilled trades. The prospect of earning while learning further enhances the attractiveness of these professions. Within this context, SkilledTradesBC plays a pivotal role, managing nearly 90 trades programs in the province, of which 50 are recognized as Red Seal programs. Roofing, an essential component of this sector, offers a promising career path for aspiring tradespeople.
Roofers, officially recognized under the Red Seal occupational title, undergo rigorous training that equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their field. The Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia (RCABC) facilitates this training through its Educational Foundation, which operates a dedicated training center located in Langley. Since its establishment in 1994, the center has successfully trained approximately 500 apprentices annually in various roofing disciplines, including architectural sheet metal work and residential steep roofing.
Robert Scales, the director of education and training at RCABC, emphasizes the importance of this training center in cultivating a skilled workforce. Graduates from these programs often advance to roles such as journeypersons, foremen, supervisors, inspectors, estimators, technical representatives, salespeople, and even roofing company owners, showcasing the diverse opportunities available within the trade.
The roofer training program encompasses a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of roofing and damp proofing. Participants learn essential skills such as the installation, repair, and replacement of various roofing systems, including flat and sloped roofs made from materials like tile, slate, composite wood, metal, modified bitumen, and thermoplastics. Safety training is also a critical component, with courses on working procedures, tool usage, torch safety, first aid, fall protection, and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
The architectural sheet metal worker program is another significant offering, focusing on the preparation, repair, and fabrication of building components like metal roofs and walls. This two-year program combines work-based training with in-school technical instruction, ensuring that participants acquire the necessary skills to thrive in this specialized field. Key subjects include the use of tools, scaffolding, interpreting drawings, and identifying various metals.
For those interested in residential work, the residential steep roofer program provides targeted training on installing steep-slope roofing and weatherproofing materials. This program, also lasting two years, emphasizes precision and the ability to read blueprints and building codes accurately. Participants learn to measure, cut, shape, and assemble materials on-site, which is crucial for successful roofing projects.
Scales highlights that roofing is often overlooked by young people considering a career in the trades, despite its potential for high earnings and the extensive knowledge required to achieve competence. He advocates for increased awareness of roofing as a viable and rewarding career option for the next generation of tradespeople. As more young individuals recognize the opportunities available in roofing and other skilled trades, the future of the industry in British Columbia looks promising.
