Niagara Parks announces a significant $25 million renovation for its Journey Behind the Falls attraction, including the reopening of a historic tunnel and the construction of new viewing platforms.
Niagara Parks has unveiled plans for a substantial renovation of its most popular attraction, Journey Behind the Falls, which will receive a significant investment of $25 million sourced from its own earned revenue. This renovation represents the most extensive transformation of the attraction in several decades. A key feature of the project includes the reopening of a historic tunnel that has remained closed since the Second World War, alongside the development of two new, year-round viewing platforms designed to replace the aging Rainbow Platform that was originally established in 1951.The contractors selected for this ambitious project are Rankin Construction and Ellis Engineering, following a thorough Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Marcelo Gruosso, the Chief Operating Officer of Niagara Parks, commented on the project, stating, "The new platform will incorporate a design-build approach. The overall design is intended to naturally integrate into the gorge rock face, providing opportunities for year-round viewing through the use of heated concrete and a protective roof structure."
The Journey Behind the Falls attraction has a rich history, dating back to its initial opening in 1889. It has been captivating visitors by taking them 125 feet below ground level to experience the stunning Horseshoe Falls up close for over 130 years. The renovation project is set to unfold in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in the summer of 2027. This phase will focus on expanding the attraction’s tunnel network to incorporate the original tunnel built in 1903, which was closed during the Second World War. Visitors can expect to see carved rock walls and exposed wooden beams that showcase the tunnel's historical elements as they would have appeared at the turn of the century.
In addition to the tunnel work, a brand-new, year-round viewing platform will be constructed, offering guests a panoramic perspective of Niagara Falls and sweeping views of the entire Niagara Gorge throughout all four seasons. The launch of this new platform will ensure that the Journey Behind the Falls remains operational while renovations to the existing Rainbow Platform are underway.
The second phase of the project, slated for a summer 2028 opening, will involve a complete redevelopment of the lower observation deck. This new design will feature modern enhancements, including increased accessibility and a new observation platform that will bring visitors closer to the iconic Horseshoe Falls.
Gruosso noted that the historic tunnel stabilization was completed this past spring, which included the implementation of rock anchoring, galvanized steel mesh, shotcrete, stainless-steel railings, improved lighting, drainage, and a concrete walkway to enhance accessibility.
The redevelopment of Journey Behind the Falls is not only a significant upgrade to the attraction but also aligns with the province’s Destination Niagara Strategy. This strategy aims to double annual visitation to the region, enhance its economic impact, elevate its global profile, and attract additional private investment in the area.
Overall, this ambitious renovation project is poised to enhance the year-round guest experience at one of Niagara’s most iconic attractions while supporting future growth and capacity.
