LNG Canada Advances Phase 2 Expansion at Kitimat LNG Terminal

LNG Canada confirms the commencement of its Phase 2 expansion project, which will significantly increase its liquefied natural gas production capacity in British Columbia.

In a significant development for the Canadian energy sector, LNG Canada has announced its decision to proceed with the Phase 2 expansion of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal located in Kitimat, British Columbia. This expansion is set to double the terminal's capacity to an impressive 28 million tonnes per year, marking a pivotal step in enhancing Canada's position as a key player in the global energy market.
LNG Canada’s CEO, Chris Cooper, emphasized the positive impact this project will have on job creation, stating that it will generate thousands of jobs and solidify Canada's role as a trusted energy partner. "LNG Canada Phase 2 is another nation-building investment that demonstrates Canada can build big things when governments, First Nations partners, local communities, skilled trades, contractors, and investors work together with shared purpose," Cooper remarked in a statement.
The first phase of the LNG Canada project commenced operations last year, successfully beginning shipments of liquefied natural gas. The upcoming expansion is designed to build upon the existing infrastructure and footprint established during the first phase. Key components of the Phase 2 expansion include the addition of two new LNG processing units, commonly referred to as trains, as well as a new LNG storage tank, a condensate tank, and a loading berth. Furthermore, the project will enhance utility and process systems to support the increased capacity.
In conjunction with the expansion, LNG Canada is collaborating with Coastal GasLink to augment the existing 670-kilometre pipeline. This will involve the construction of five new compressor stations, which are essential for ensuring the efficient transport of natural gas to the terminal.
LNG Canada operates as a joint venture, involving major industry players such as Shell, Malaysia’s Petronas, PetroChina, Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp., and South Korea’s KOGAS. The collaboration among these companies underscores the project's significance not just for the local economy in Kitimat, but for the broader energy landscape in Canada.
As the project progresses, it is expected to attract further investment and support from various stakeholders, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in advancing major infrastructure projects in the country. The expansion of LNG Canada not only promises economic benefits but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to becoming a leading exporter of natural gas in the international market.
