Major Road Upgrades Underway in Aroland First Nation for Ring of Fire Project

Significant road enhancements are in progress in Aroland First Nation, advancing the Ring of Fire initiative with an expected completion by November 2030.

In Aroland First Nation, substantial work has commenced on significant upgrades to the Anaconda and Painter Lake roads, representing a pivotal advancement for the Ring of Fire initiative. The preliminary design and initial works aimed at expanding these roads began in late June and are already in progress. According to a recent release, the roads are set to open two years ahead of schedule, by November 2030.
The upgrades are expected to encompass vital improvements, including bridge enhancements, upgrades to drainage systems, realignment efforts, and the widening of both roads to comply with two-lane secondary highway standards. The overall project will span approximately 97 kilometers and will involve the replacement of all 62 culverts along the corridor.
These enhancements are designed to facilitate the connection of Highway 643 to the proposed all-season roads corridor leading to the Ring of Fire. This corridor includes the proposed Marten Falls Community Access Road, the Webequie Supply Road, and the anticipated Northern Road Link, as detailed in the release.
The ongoing work on the Anaconda and Painter Lake roads is a continuation of Ontarioโ€™s expedited initiative to finalize roads leading to the Ring of Fire. Other projects currently in development include the construction of the Webequie Supply Road, which commenced in June 2026 and is expected to be completed by November 2030. Additionally, construction on the Marten Falls Community Access Road is slated to begin this month, with an anticipated opening in November 2031. The Northern Road Link is projected to start construction in the spring of 2028, with completion also expected in November 2031.
