Milton Breaks Ground on New Elementary School to Accommodate Growing Student Population

The Halton District School Board has commenced construction on a new elementary school in Milton, Ontario, aimed at addressing rising student enrollment. With a budget of approximately $43 million, the school is expected to open by fall 2028.

Earlier this month, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) officially broke ground on a new elementary school located at 1345 Trudeau Dr. in Milton, Ontario. This development is currently referred to as Milton #13 Public School and is projected to be a significant addition to the local educational landscape. The project carries a budget of approximately $43 million, funded by capital allocations from the Province of Ontario. The new facility aims to accommodate the growing student enrollment in the Milton area, with an anticipated opening in the fall of 2028.
The three-storey structure will be designed to serve 926 students, featuring an open-concept library complemented by a rooftop terrace that provides views of the surrounding neighborhood. Additionally, the school will include 88 licensed child care spaces to further support families in the community. "The beginning of construction is an exciting moment for Milton students and families," stated Curtis Ennis, the chief executive officer of the HDSB. He emphasized that the new school will create a welcoming environment conducive to learning, fostering friendships and personal growth, aligning with the goals set forth in the HDSB’s multi-year strategic plan (MYSP).
The MYSP for 2024-2028 outlines a roadmap for the HDSB, prioritizing collective efforts among students, staff, families, and community members to effectively support over 64,000 students and 10,000 staff within the HDSB community.
The architectural design for the new school has been entrusted to Hossack Architecture, while Struct-Con Construction Ltd. will oversee the construction phase. According to Haley Juniper, the HDSB’s manager of communications and engagement, the architect was chosen through a request for proposal process, and the general contractor was selected via a tender process utilizing a list of pre-approved vendors. This method ensures that all participating firms have met established pre-qualification standards.
The new school building is set to incorporate various environmentally friendly initiatives, including energy-efficient HVAC systems, enhanced insulation for roofs and walls, white roofing materials aimed at minimizing cooling energy consumption, and high-efficiency LED lighting. Furthermore, the project will embrace low-impact site design principles, featuring native drought-tolerant shrubs and trees, water-saving plumbing fixtures, and locally sourced building materials throughout, showcasing a commitment to sustainability in educational infrastructure.
