Newfoundland and Labrador Assembles Team to Maximize Local Benefits from Quebec Energy Deal

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has formed a new team aimed at ensuring that residents of Labrador benefit from a proposed energy deal with Quebec, amidst concerns about the impact of incoming workers on local infrastructure.

ST. JOHN’S — The government of Newfoundland and Labrador is taking proactive steps to ensure that residents of Labrador reap the benefits of a proposed multibillion-dollar energy deal with Quebec. To facilitate this, the provincial government has appointed a trio of members from the legislature to form a new initiative aimed at maximizing local economic opportunities stemming from the agreement. This collaboration comes as public utility companies from both provinces have proposed several energy projects in the vicinity of the Churchill River.
Concerns have been raised by local officials regarding the potential influx of workers associated with these projects. Mayor Bert Pomeroy of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has voiced his apprehensions, highlighting that such a surge in workforce could strain local housing, healthcare, and supporting infrastructure.
In response to these concerns, the provincial government has established Team Labrador, which will engage with a variety of stakeholders including Indigenous governments and organizations, municipalities, community leaders, and local businesses throughout the region. Keith Russell, one of the newly appointed representatives to Team Labrador, emphasized the importance of early planning and community involvement. He stated, “Major development on the Churchill River will have impacts well beyond the project sites, particularly for communities throughout central Labrador.”
Russell further noted that it is crucial to listen to the voices of Indigenous governments, municipal representatives, residents, and businesses to effectively respond to the challenges and opportunities that may arise from the projects.
The efforts of Team Labrador will also contribute to the province’s broader northern strategy, ensuring that the local needs and perspectives are integrated into the planning and implementation processes of the energy developments. The formation of this team signals a commitment from the Newfoundland and Labrador government to prioritize the well-being of its communities while pursuing significant economic ventures.
