New Carpentry Training Program Launched in Kootenays, B.C.

KOOTENAYS, B.C. — A new initiative aiming to bolster the skilled trades workforce in the Kootenays has been launched, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada. The Industry-Ready Carpentry Foundation project is set to provide individuals in the region with valuable training and career opportunities in carpentry. This program will be facilitated by the Kootenay Career Development Society in collaboration with Selkirk College, as outlined in a recent announcement. Under the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement, the Province of British Columbia is investing in this initiative, which aims to prepare up to 16 participants for careers in the skilled trades. The project is designed to be tuition-free, making it accessible to a broader audience. Participants will receive carpentry training at Selkirk College, which will be complemented by industry-recognized certifications. These certifications include first aid, WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), forklift operation, and fall protection training. Beyond classroom learning, students will also be equipped with essential tools and provided with financial support for those who qualify. Additionally, the program includes a six-week paid work placement with a local employer, offering hands-on experience in the field. Projections from WorkBC indicate a robust demand for carpenters in British Columbia, with over 10,000 job openings expected between 2025 and 2035. This highlights significant career opportunities for individuals looking to enter the construction industry. The Industry-Ready Carpentry Foundation project is a step towards removing barriers that often hinder individuals from pursuing careers in the trades, thereby contributing to the growth and sustainability of the skilled trades workforce in the region.
