Nova Scotia Construction Industry Launches Working Group to Promote Respectful Workplaces

The Nova Scotia construction sector has formed the Respectful Workplaces Working Group, aimed at enhancing workplace safety and culture following new legislation on injury prevention and workplace harassment.

DARTMOUTH, N.S. – In a significant development for the construction industry in Nova Scotia, a new initiative called the Respectful Workplaces Working Group has been established to enhance the culture of safety within the sector. This initiative, spearheaded by the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Coalition, is a collaborative effort that unites construction leaders, employers, workers, industry associations, and labor representatives among other stakeholders. The primary goal of this group is to facilitate knowledge sharing and coordinate actionable steps to address workplace safety concerns, as outlined in an official release.
The formation of the working group comes in response to recent legislative changes and new injury-prevention requirements that have been implemented across the province. Notably, these changes include the recognition of gradual onset psychological injuries as compensable under workers’ compensation, the introduction of the Safer Workplaces Together injury-prevention strategy, and the strengthening of harassment protections within the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
MJ MacDonald, the CEO of Construction Safety Nova Scotia, expressed the industry's positive reception of these new legislative changes, stating, “The industry welcomes these new changes, and we want to support all employers to meet them.” He emphasized that the working group serves as a coordinated effort for the construction sector to navigate these evolving expectations, share best practices, and advance in a supportive manner.
As part of its initial actions, the Respectful Workplaces Working Group has launched an industry survey designed to gather insights on existing initiatives, challenges, and opportunities within Nova Scotia's construction landscape. The survey targets a broad audience of construction industry stakeholders, including employers, managers, supervisors, safety professionals, industry associations, and labor representatives, aiming to capture a comprehensive view of the sector’s current state.
The group will work towards making relevant resources and best practices more accessible, identifying gaps and emerging needs in workplace safety, and developing tools that foster respectful workplaces and ensure compliance with updated regulations. This initiative marks a proactive step towards building a safer and more inclusive construction environment in Nova Scotia, paving the way for enhanced workplace culture throughout the sector.
