The South Bowmanville Recreation Centre in Clarington, Ont. is set to open its first phase this fall, featuring a variety of sports and community amenities, with a total project cost of $65 million.

Residents of Clarington, Ontario, are eagerly anticipating the upcoming opening of the first phase of the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre, a project that aims to significantly enhance community amenities. The recreation centre, located on the Clarington Fields lands at 2375 Baseline Rd W, is designed by the architectural firm MJMA. The first phase of this ambitious project, valued at $65 million, is expected to be completed this fall. This initial phase will introduce a range of facilities aimed at promoting health and recreation within the community.
Among the key features of the first phase is a FIFA-sized multi-sport dome that will include a three-lane indoor walking track. This dome will provide versatile space for various sports activities, making it a vital addition for local athletes and sports enthusiasts. Additionally, two FIBA-sized basketball courts will be constructed, designed to be fully accessible and adaptable for other sports such as pickleball, tennis, and volleyball, along with perimeter bench seating for spectators.
The centre will also feature an outdoor refrigerated skating trail, which is designed to be utilized year-round, offering a unique recreational option for residents. Multi-purpose rooms will be included for fitness and recreational activities, catering to diverse community needs. Furthermore, a calming quiet room will provide a peaceful space for sensory breaks, meditation, and quiet reflection.
The facility will also boast an open concept change area equipped with benches and lockers, ensuring convenience for users. In addition to the recreational components, the project will improve community access with expanded parking and landscaping, alongside a new intersection and road.
The Municipality of Clarington has outlined that this project will be executed in two phases. The second phase, projected to cost approximately $53.5 million, is expected to open in 2027 and will further enhance the facilities available at the centre. This phase will include an outdoor splash pad and playground, as well as an aquatics centre featuring a 25-metre main pool, a warm water pool, and ample viewing areas designed for both lane and public swimming, swimming lessons, and aquafit classes.
In addition to the aquatic features, this second phase will introduce more multi-purpose rooms for fitness and recreation, strategically located near the pool to support aquatic leadership programming. The design will also incorporate a variety of change areas, as well as dedicated spaces for lifeguards and staff, including large on-deck storage and staff change facilities.
With these developments, the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre is set to become a cornerstone of community engagement and physical wellness in Clarington, offering a comprehensive range of facilities that cater to various recreational needs. The project not only signifies an investment in local infrastructure but also reflects a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents in the area.
