Southern Alberta Art Gallery Set for Major Revitalization in Downtown Lethbridge

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge is undergoing a significant renovation, set to enhance its facilities and expand its offerings to the public, with a projected completion date in spring 2028.

LETHBRIDGE, ALTA. – A major transformation is on the horizon for the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) located in downtown Lethbridge. According to an announcement, the upcoming renovations will revamp the existing interior spaces and introduce new indoor and outdoor amenities. Architect Robert Claiborne, a partner at DIALOG, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Our work here is a conversation with the histories and memories of this place. This project is a process of discovering the possibilities lying dormant within the buildings. By unlocking the right moments and views, a transformation will take place." The renovation includes several notable features designed to enhance the gallery experience: a park-side entrance and patio that connects to Galt Gardens, a food services area comprising a café and catering kitchen, an outdoor space known as the Listening Garden for gathering, relaxation, reflection, and public art, an upgraded lower gallery environment, and a mixed-use workshop dedicated to exhibition-building, programs, and events. Su Ying Strang, the executive director of SAAG, shared her excitement about the project, stating, "We’re excited to expand and revitalize the Gallery in a way that reflects our communities’ evolving needs. This project creates a variety of new spaces to host our expanding and increasingly diverse audiences. Our vision is to create a welcoming hub centered in great art and wonderful hospitality. This project will help us grow our audiences, supporting our belief that art is for everyone." The estimated cost for the renovation is approximately $7.71 million. During the renovation period, SAAG will continue to operate in three alternative locations: SAAG Acadia at 616 3 Avenue South, SAAG Express at 1409 Mayor Magrath Drive South, and SAAG x Excite at 101 Exhibition Way South. The revitalized Southern Alberta Art Gallery is expected to reopen to the public in the spring of 2028.
