Sugar Maple Elected as Toronto's 2027 Tree of the Year

The Sugar Maple has been chosen as Toronto's Tree of the Year for 2027, following a Kids Vote Weekend that saw over 10,000 ballots cast. A ceremonial planting of the winning tree is planned for November 3, with plans to plant 1,000 Sugar Maples across the city throughout the year.

On October 22, 2026, Toronto Elections announced the results of the 2027 Tree of the Year voting, which saw an impressive turnout of over 10,000 ballots during the Kids Vote Weekend. The children of Toronto have selected the Sugar Maple as the Tree of the Year, garnering 4,549 votes. This tree, celebrated for its stunning fall foliage that displays vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, is native to the region and plays a critical role in enhancing the city’s urban forest. The Sugar Maple’s expansive canopy not only provides shade and helps cool local neighborhoods but also supports wildlife and contributes to improved air quality, fostering healthier communities.
The voting took place over the weekend of October 10 and 11 at 50 designated advance voting locations, where children were presented with five tree candidates: Basswood, Paper Birch, Red Oak, Sugar Maple, and White Pine. The Kids Vote Weekend initiative is designed to cultivate future voters, educate young citizens about local democracy, and familiarize them with the voting process.
To mark the occasion of the Sugar Maple’s election, a ceremonial planting event will be held on Tuesday, November 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at Elm Park, located at 230 Gosford Blvd. Additional details regarding participation in this event can be found on the Elm Park Tree Planting Event webpage.
In a broader initiative throughout 2027, the City of Toronto intends to plant 1,000 Sugar Maple trees across public lands. This will be accomplished through community planting events, educational school programs, and tree giveaway initiatives. Schools will also have the opportunity to receive Sugar Maple trees at no cost to plant on their grounds.
