Welland Hospital to Undergo Significant Renovations Ahead of New South Niagara Hospital Opening

The Welland Hospital is set for renovations to enhance its facilities in anticipation of the new South Niagara Hospital, with a focus on improving patient care and addressing aging infrastructure.

Renovations at Welland Hospital are now in the planning phase after receiving approval from the provincial government last fall. These renovations are poised to enhance the hospital's capabilities by adding over 60 complex care beds and establishing a 35-bed residential addictions treatment program. This project is being undertaken in conjunction with the preparations for the opening of the new South Niagara Hospital, scheduled for 2028. The design and construction of the South Niagara Hospital is currently underway, with a project value of $3.6 billion located on Montrose Road in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It aims to transition to a three-site hospital system model that will streamline patient care and reduce wait times across the region.
Niagara Health is actively advancing through the planning phase, collaborating closely with the Ministry of Health to focus on necessary infrastructure upgrades. These upgrades include enhancements to the chiller and boiler plant systems, the addition of a second generator, and improvements to patient care environments. An update provided to the City of Welland Council by Niagara Health officials highlighted these initiatives as essential to meet the evolving needs of the community.
The impetus for these infrastructure upgrades arose last summer when the hospital experienced back-to-back incidents involving a main pipe break in July 2025 and a watermain break in August 2025. The damage from these incidents affected critical areas of service such as operating rooms and medical device reprocessing, underscoring the pressing need for significant upgrades to the 65-year-old facility. Following these incidents, Niagara Health issued a news release reflecting on the challenges posed by aging infrastructure and expressed optimism about the upcoming South Niagara Hospital, which is expected to mitigate similar lifecycle issues in the future.
The Welland Hospital renovations will include several key enhancements aimed at improving safety and patient experience. Planned upgrades encompass enhanced safety and security measures in specific areas, refreshed patient rooms, and an increase in the number of single and double patient rooms, aimed at reducing the number of triple and eliminating quad rooms. The specific areas designated for these improvements include Level One in the Woolcott wing, the Complex Continuing Care unit, as well as various sectors across Levels Two, Three, Four, and Six.
Infrastructure enhancements will focus on modernizing core systems within the hospital, including chiller plant upgrades, steam boiler replacements, and the installation of a second generator. These upgrades are designed to support clinical services and ensure long-term sustainability for the hospital.
As the project progresses, preparations are underway to transition into the construction phase, with renovations continuing through to 2028, aligned with the opening of the South Niagara Hospital. These renovations are critical for reinforcing Welland Hospital's role within the future three-site system, with plans to carefully phase the work to avoid impacting hospital operations.
Harpreet Bassi, executive vice-president of strategy, research, and redevelopment at Niagara Health, stated, "We are now preparing to move into the construction phase, with renovations continuing through to 2028 in coordination with the opening of the South Niagara Hospital. These renovations are essential to strengthen Welland Hospital’s role as a cornerstone of Niagara’s future three-site system. The work has been carefully phased to ensure no impact on hospital operations. The project will enhance patient safety, increase capacity for complex continuing care, and support the relocation and growth of specialized programs."
The search for a contractor for the estimated $55 million renovation project is set to commence this summer, with Niagara Health preparing to issue a request for qualifications and proposals. Construction is anticipated to start in spring 2027. The contract for the South Niagara Hospital, valued at $3.6 billion over five years, was awarded to EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare following a Request for Proposal (RFP) process that began in October 2021.
