Aecon Group Inc. has secured a significant share of contracts for the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, enhancing Ontario's clean energy capabilities.

Aecon Group Inc., headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, has announced a substantial addition to its project backlog with $1.75 billion in new contracts awarded for the ongoing refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. This announcement, made on September 21, 2026, comes as part of a collaborative effort with AtkinsRéalis and Siemens Energy, which collectively secured contracts from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) valued at $3 billion. This new contract builds on previously awarded work that laid the groundwork for the refurbishment project.
As a key player in this venture, Aecon will undertake critical construction and major component replacement services essential to the refurbishment's success. The project is designed to enhance the long-term operational efficiency of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, which plays a vital role in meeting Ontario's increasing demand for clean energy. Initial preparatory work has already commenced, with full-scale execution of the refurbishment expected to begin in January 2027, contingent upon receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.
Aecon's involvement includes a significant contract worth $1.7 billion awarded to its 50/50 joint venture with AtkinsRéalis for the Unit 5 Retube, Feeder and Boiler Replacement (RFBR) project. This contract marks the first phase of the RFBR initiative within the broader refurbishment agenda, with similar contracts anticipated for Units 6, 7, and 8 as the project progresses, again subject to regulatory clearance. The RFBR tasks encompass the replacement of critical components such as steam generators, fuel channels, and feeders, which are pivotal for extending the operational lifespan of the generating station.
In addition to this, a consortium led by Aecon and Siemens Energy has been entrusted with a $1.3 billion contract for the Turbine Generator Replacement (TGR) project. Aecon holds a majority stake in this consortium and will manage both construction services and the procurement of necessary materials. The TGR scope includes the installation of 14 new steam turbine rotors, the refurbishment of four generators, and the provision of new auxiliary systems along with a control and monitoring framework.
The collaborative efforts on these projects are nearing completion of their initial development phases, with further prerequisite tasks set to commence shortly. Aecon’s President and CEO, Jean-Louis Servranckx, emphasized the importance of the Pickering Nuclear Refurbishment Project for Ontario's clean energy future, highlighting Aecon's extensive experience in managing complex nuclear projects across North America.
Aecon's participation in this refurbishment is not only a testament to its extensive expertise in nuclear construction but also reflects its commitment to supporting the province's energy transition by ensuring a reliable supply of low-carbon electricity. Aaron Johnson, Aecon's Senior Vice President of Nuclear, remarked on the company's proven track record, referencing the successful completion of the Darlington Refurbishment ahead of schedule and under budget, which serves as a model for the current project.
Through its leadership role in the Pickering Refurbishment, along with similar projects such as the Darlington Refurbishment and the Bruce Power Major Component Replacement program, Aecon is positioned as a crucial contributor to North America's largest nuclear refurbishment initiatives. Furthermore, Aecon is also involved in the development of the G7's first commercial grid-scale Small Modular Reactor through the Darlington New Nuclear Project, further solidifying its status in the nuclear sector.
