Aecon Group Selected as Development Partner for Hamilton LRT Project

Aecon Group has been chosen by Metrolinx as the construction partner for the Hamilton Light Rail Transit project, which aims to enhance mobility in Hamilton, Ontario.

Toronto, Ontario – April 30, 2026: Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE), a leading construction and infrastructure development company, announced today its selection as the construction partner for the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT) Civil and Utilities Works project. Metrolinx, the project owner, has engaged the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance, which includes Aecon alongside a joint venture of Hatch, Egis, and Systra responsible for the design phase.
This collaboration is formalized through the execution of an alliance development phase agreement, setting the stage for detailed negotiations regarding the project's scope, costs, and timelines. This development phase is anticipated to last between 18 to 24 months, after which the construction implementation phase will commence.
The Hamilton LRT project is designed to provide a modern and reliable transportation solution, spanning 14 kilometers through Hamilton's downtown core. The route will connect key points from McMaster University to Eastgate and will include 17 strategically placed stops. Furthermore, this new transit line will integrate with GO Transit and Hamilton’s HSR bus services, significantly enhancing public transport connectivity.
Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and CEO of Aecon Group Inc., expressed the company's enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Aecon’s experience building some of the most transformative transit projects of this generation, including three modern LRTs in Ontario, will be of great value to this critical project for Hamilton.” He emphasized the importance of leveraging their civil and utilities teams to effectively self-perform the essential tasks required for this project.
The collaborative nature of the development phase is expected to yield benefits for all stakeholders involved, as Aecon aims to work closely with Metrolinx to advance the project efficiently. The anticipated improvements in mobility are particularly significant for Hamilton's growing communities, as the LRT is expected to address both current and future transportation needs.
Further details about the Hamilton LRT project can be accessed through Metrolinx’s official website, which will provide ongoing updates as the project progresses.
