Aecon Group Partners with First Nations for Major Energy Storage Project in Ontario

Aecon Group Inc. has partnered with First Nations and other stakeholders to develop the Simcoe Battery Energy Storage System in Norfolk County, Ontario, under a 20-year agreement with IESO.

TORONTO — Aecon Group Inc. has announced a significant development in the energy sector with the formation of the Simcoe Battery Project General Partnership Inc. This partnership, which includes Aecon Concessions as an equity partner, has successfully executed an energy storage facility agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The agreement pertains to the construction, ownership, and operation of the Simcoe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, which boasts a capacity of 150 MW and can store up to 1,200 MWh of energy. This project will be located in Norfolk County, Ontario.
The ownership structure of this project is a collaborative effort involving several key partners. In addition to Aecon Concessions, the partners include the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC), the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation, Sitka Power Inc., and NRStor. Together, these organizations will provide essential electricity storage services to the IESO through a long-term agreement lasting 20 years. Under this agreement, they will not only receive payments for the capacity services but will also benefit from additional revenue generated by selling energy into the Ontario electricity grid, along with ancillary services.
Aecon’s role extends beyond that of an equity partner; the company is also designated as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) provider for the balance of plant works associated with the project. This relationship emphasizes Aecon's commitment to the successful delivery of the project, which is slated to commence commercial operations by the year 2030.
The Simcoe Battery Project is seen as a complementary addition to Aecon Concessions’ existing interests in energy storage, particularly the Oneida Energy Storage Project located in Ontario, which has been operational since May 2025. This ongoing commitment to energy storage solutions highlights a strategic direction for Aecon as it continues to expand its presence in the renewable energy sector. Overall, this partnership not only represents a significant investment in energy infrastructure but also fosters collaboration with First Nations communities, ensuring that local interests are represented in this vital project.
