Algoma Steel Group Inc., based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has disclosed a net loss of $96 million for the second quarter of the year. This marks an improvement compared to the net loss of $110.6 million reported in the same quarter of the previous year. The loss translates to a net loss per diluted share of 88 cents, a decrease from the $1.02 loss per diluted share in the prior year's second quarter.During this recent quarter, Algoma Steel's consolidated revenue was recorded at $267.5 million, reflecting a substantial decline from $589.7 million during the same period last year. The company's total shipments stood at 181,473 tons, significantly lower than the 472,056 tons shipped a year earlier.
In terms of costs, Algoma Steel faced direct tariff expenses amounting to $18.7 million, a notable reduction from the $64.1 million incurred in the prior-year quarter. Rajat Marwah, the CEO of Algoma Steel, emphasized that the company remains the sole producer of discrete plate in Canada, positioning itself strategically to meet the increasing demands in infrastructure, construction, and defense sectors.
