B.C. Expands Skilled Trades Training to Meet Growing Demand

The government of British Columbia is enhancing skilled trades training by adding new seats at Vancouver Island University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, aiming to meet a commitment of 5,000 seats provincewide by 2026-27.

In a significant move to address the skilled trades gap in British Columbia, Vancouver Island University (VIU) and Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in Surrey are set to expand their skilled-trades training offerings. This initiative is part of the provincial government's broader commitment to introduce 5,000 new training seats by the 2026-27 academic year. The additional seats aim to alleviate existing waitlists for popular apprenticeship programs and to encourage more young individuals to consider careers in the trades, which are essential for the region's economic development.
The government reports that VIU will be allocated 64 new training seats, raising its total to 1,550 available seats for this academic year. Meanwhile, KPU is set to receive a much larger increase, with 462 new skilled-trades training seats, bringing its total to 1,762. The new positions at KPU will facilitate training in several critical occupations, including construction electricians, industrial mechanics (millwrights), plumbers, construction craft workers, and parts technicians.
These expansions are part of the government's Look West strategy, which aims to bolster trades training across the province. The initiative is backed by a substantial investment of $241 million over the next three years, targeting the enhancement of training infrastructure and capacity in key sectors.
The decision to expand training seats comes in response to the growing demand for skilled tradespeople, particularly in areas related to construction and infrastructure maintenance. By increasing the number of training opportunities, the government seeks to ensure that the workforce is adequately prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving job market.
