The Province of British Columbia has awarded a $74.2 million contract to Norland Kingston General Partnership for the replacement of the CPKC rail overpass near Langley, enhancing safety and traffic flow along Highway 1.
LANGLEY, B.C. – The provincial government of British Columbia has initiated the process to replace the CPKC rail overpass located near Langley in the Fraser Valley, specifically along Highway 1. A significant contract worth $74.2 million has been granted to Norland Kingston General Partnership, a company based in British Columbia, to undertake the replacement of the existing rail overpass structure situated between 216th Street and 264th Street. This project forms a crucial component of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, as detailed in an official release from the government. The new overpass is designed to feature an increased height clearance of 5.2 metres, which is an improvement over the current clearance of 4.4 metres. This enhancement is expected to facilitate additional lanes on Highway 1, including the introduction of new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in both directions. The upgrade comes in response to a history of overpass crashes at this location, and the increased height clearance aims to bolster safety and minimize the risk of structural damage.
According to the release, construction activities for the overpass replacement are anticipated to commence this summer. This project is part of a broader initiative, specifically the planned phase two improvements within the corridor between 216th Street and 264th Street. The overall investment for these enhancements is substantial, amounting to approximately $480 million, funded collaboratively by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
This investment reflects the commitment of both levels of government to improve transportation infrastructure in the region, ensuring safer and more efficient travel along one of the province's critical highways. The replacement of the CPKC rail overpass is a vital step in enhancing the safety and operational capacity of Highway 1, ultimately benefiting all users of the corridor.
