Bell Canada to Expand Data Centre Project in Saskatchewan Significantly

Bell Canada plans to significantly expand its data centre project in Saskatchewan, aiming for a total capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, which is projected to bring over $50 billion in capital investment and create thousands of jobs.

In a major announcement at Canada’s inaugural investment summit, held in Toronto, Bell Canada revealed its intention to significantly expand its data centre initiative in Saskatchewan. This expansion was jointly announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, marking a pivotal moment for both the company and the province. Carney highlighted that the project is expected to exceed $50 billion in capital investment, representing the largest such investment in Saskatchewan's history. He emphasized the scale of the project, calling it 'the largest sovereign AI infrastructure network in Canada.' The planned expansion will increase the data centre's capacity to 1.2 gigawatts. According to a press release from the Saskatchewan government, 300 megawatts of this capacity will be sourced from the provincial grid. The project is designed to include a phased development that could add up to 900 megawatts of additional capacity, which Bell will provide under Saskatchewan’s 'Bring Your Own Power' principle. Premier Moe stated that this initiative will not only enhance the province's technological infrastructure but also create significant employment opportunities. He noted that the project is expected to generate up to 500 permanent jobs, along with an estimated 3,000 additional positions in various sectors, including security, logistics, and maintenance. Moe articulated the importance of data sovereignty, stressing the necessity for Canadians to have access to local data storage solutions. He posed a critical question regarding the future of Canadian data, asking whether the country would build the necessary infrastructure to keep data within its borders or allow foreign entities to control it. The Canada Investment Summit, which commenced on Monday, attracted some of the world's leading asset managers and foreign investors, showcasing opportunities across multiple sectors, including energy, critical minerals, and defense. This event underscores the growing interest in Canadian infrastructure projects and the potential for significant foreign investment in the country’s economy.
