Renewed Plan for Burnaby Hospital Project Moves Forward Following Community Feedback

The B.C. government has announced a renewed plan for the Burnaby Hospital Project, focusing on immediate enhancements to emergency and surgical services, driven by community input after a previous contract cancellation.

BURNABY, B.C. — The British Columbia government has revealed that the Burnaby Hospital Project will advance with a refreshed strategy aimed at enhancing healthcare services in the region. Immediate improvements to emergency services and surgical care are set to commence, according to a government release, with future expansions in cancer care and acute-care services planned to follow. "The residents of Burnaby have expressed the significance of this hospital to their community, and they deserve access to care that is timely, dependable, and conveniently located," stated Bowinn Ma, the minister of infrastructure. The announcement follows the government’s earlier decision to cancel a construction contract for a hospital expansion earlier this year, which triggered community protests and significant public opposition in May. This latest initiative builds upon the upgrades initiated in phase one of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment, which is part of a broader modernization effort for the facility. Phase one, which opened in early 2026, introduced a new six-storey healthcare pavilion featuring 83 beds, which includes maternity, neonatal intensive care, mental health, and medical units. Additionally, it expanded the capacity of the support facilities building, which now includes new areas in the emergency department, six operating rooms, and a modernized energy center designed to support the needs of the growing community. The next phase of the project is set to proceed with a funding commitment of $210 million from the provincial government, aimed at enhancing and expanding the emergency department and surgical unit at Burnaby Hospital. "As part of Budget 2026, the timeline for the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project was revised in response to escalating costs. Updated preliminary estimates, informed by detailed design work, indicated that the redevelopment was significantly over budget," the release states. "To mitigate cost pressures, the project board sought an independent report, which provided 25 recommendations and guidance on how to deliver the project within its budget and scope." The planned expansion of the emergency department will occur within the support facilities building and will feature a combined waiting and patient check-in area, a new decontamination zone with ambulance entry, and 16 additional treatment spaces, alongside upgraded mechanical, electrical, and information management systems. The renewed surgical department will also be housed in the support facilities, incorporating four upgraded operating rooms in conjunction with the six new operating rooms that were opened in early 2026, resulting in a total of 10 standardized operating rooms. It will also feature an integrated sterile core serving all 10 operating rooms, four minor procedure rooms, and 42 renovated perioperative preparation and recovery bays, marking an increase of 17 bays. The project includes expanded support areas designed with separate pathways for patients and staff. Initial procurement processes are expected to conclude by early 2027, with detailed design and construction phases to follow.
