Demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School Begins Following Tragic Shooting

Demolition has commenced at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, the site of a mass shooting earlier this year, as the community prepares for the construction of a new school funded by provincial and federal governments.

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — The demolition process has officially started at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, located in northern British Columbia, which was the scene of a tragic mass shooting earlier this year. Recent images shared on social media depict heavy machinery, including excavators, dismantling the structure, tearing down its outer walls and exposing pink insulation, with debris accumulating beside the building. This site has been marked by sorrow since the incident on February 10, where eight individuals lost their lives due to the actions of 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar. Among the deceased were her mother and brother, who were fatally shot at their nearby home, followed by five children and an educational assistant at the school. As law enforcement approached, Van Rootselaar took her own life. The decision to demolish the school comes in the wake of commitments from both the provincial and federal governments to provide funding for the establishment of a new secondary school at an alternative site. A joint press release issued on May 7 indicated that the Peace River South School Board had sought assistance after engaging with victims, their families, community members, and experts. The statement emphasized the necessity of swiftly demolishing the existing school in a manner that is sensitive to the trauma experienced by the community. Photos shared by Stu Bell, a former student of the school and now a parent of teenagers in the area, reflected a sense of relief, with Bell expressing in his post that the removal of the building was essential. "The building must go," he stated, highlighting the emotional weight of the situation for those connected to the school.
