Situated near the Fraser River in Surrey, the Finishing Trades Institute of British Columbia (FTIBC) has established itself as a pivotal trades training center for apprentices pursuing Red Seal certifications in various fields, including painter/decorator, glazier, lather (or interior systems mechanic), and drywall finisher. The institute boasts a substantial 40,000-square-foot facility equipped with five classrooms that facilitate both theoretical instruction and practical examinations, alongside specialized training in technical drawing, occupational health and safety, and other apprenticeship-related coursework.
Mark Longmore, who serves as the director of training at FTIBC and is a trained glazier, highlights that the institute is the sole provider of trades training in British Columbia for painting, industrial painting, and glazing. The glazing shop is particularly noteworthy, as it offers students hands-on experience with tools, machinery, and materials prevalent in the glass and architectural construction industry. Among the equipment available are chop and miter saws, table saws, drill presses, grinders, and various specialized power tools.
Students enrolled in the glazing program engage in comprehensive projects that encompass critical aspects of their trade, such as aluminum framing, installation of storefront systems, commercial entrances, curtain wall assemblies, and building envelope systems. The institute has also developed purpose-built glazing mock-ups where apprentices can refine their skills in commercial entrance assembly, curtain wall installation, layout, measuring, and troubleshooting, all within a controlled environment.
In addition to glazing, FTIBC provides dedicated training areas for painting and decorating. In these spaces, students master a range of skills, from surface preparation and coating application to the effective use of brushes, rollers, and other painting tools. The industrial painting program combines classroom learning with practical shop experience, preparing participants for roles in industrial, commercial, and major infrastructure projects. Students learn essential techniques for surface preparation, sandblasting, and the safe application of industrial coatings.
Furthermore, the institute has designated areas for drywall finishing and lathing training, where students practice taping, finishing, and sanding drywall. Lathers construct steel stud frameworks necessary for drywall installations in walls, ceilings, and partitions. FTIBC places a strong emphasis on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training, covering vital areas such as fall protection, aerial lift operation, confined space entry, and the safe use of various equipment. This hands-on training requires students to demonstrate their competence to instructors, ensuring they are well-prepared for real-world applications.
Longmore notes that while the finishing trades are generally in demand, they are not immune to fluctuations influenced by economic and political factors. Nevertheless, he expresses confidence in the ongoing need for finishing trades professionals, given their roles in commercial, industrial, and residential sectors, as well as their involvement in service work for clients. The FTIBC stands as a crucial institution in nurturing the next generation of skilled tradespeople in British Columbia, equipping them with the necessary skills and certifications to thrive in a competitive job market.
