Ford Remains Committed to Expanding Toronto’s Island Airport Despite Federal Opposition

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expresses confidence in expanding Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport for jets, despite federal government opposition. He emphasizes the economic benefits and suggests further polling to gauge public opinion.

In a recent statement, Ontario Premier Doug Ford conveyed his belief that his government will ultimately succeed in its efforts to expand the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to accommodate jet traffic. This assertion comes amidst significant opposition from the federal government, which previously rejected Ford's proposal. The airport, located on Toronto's islands, has historically operated under a tripartite agreement involving the city of Toronto, the federal government, and the Toronto Port Authority. Earlier this year, the provincial government assumed the city’s role in this agreement.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's government had turned down Ford’s expansion plans last month, following a federal consultation that largely reflected public disapproval of allowing jets at the airport. While Carney has stated that the results of this consultation were definitive, he has also left the door slightly ajar, suggesting that he is not completely ruling out the possibility of jets operating at the airport in the future, remarking that 'forever is a long time.' Ford, however, seems undeterred by this setback and reiterated his commitment to the project.
During a press conference in Guelph, Ontario, Ford expressed his unwavering vision for the airport's expansion, stating, 'As we move forward, I truly believe we’re going to convert that airport.' He emphasized the importance of letting the public and the market have a say in the matter, suggesting that if there is insufficient demand, the project would not proceed. He added, 'Every single person knows that airport will be a phenomenal success.'
Ford argues that an expanded airport would not only enhance the economy but also provide passengers with more convenient travel options and potentially lower fees. To gauge public sentiment further, he has requested additional polling to be conducted.
There have been reports that Ford and Carney had reached a preliminary agreement wherein the province would support Carney’s high-speed rail plan in exchange for federal backing of the airport expansion. However, Carney has clarified that he did not promise Ford any support for the airport project.
When asked about the Alto high-speed rail project, which aims to connect Quebec City and Toronto and is being championed by Carney’s administration, Ford did not provide a definitive stance. He remarked, 'Let’s see how we move forward,' while acknowledging the concerns of his eastern Ontario caucus, which has expressed significant discontent regarding the Alto project.
Following the federal government's decision to reject the airport expansion, eleven members of Ford’s caucus from eastern Ontario issued a joint statement questioning the feasibility of the Alto project, claiming that the federal government is neglecting local interests. This political dynamic illustrates the complexities surrounding infrastructure projects in Ontario, as various levels of government navigate public sentiment and economic considerations.
