Westburne marks its centennial celebration in Laval, Quebec, by discussing the future challenges of the electrical industry while unveiling a scholarship program aimed at workforce development.
This week, Westburne hosted a centennial celebration in Laval, Quebec, bringing together customers, supplier partners, and employees to engage in discussions about the opportunities and challenges that are currently shaping Quebec’s electrical industry. The event commemorated the company's 100th anniversary, which will be marked by a series of events across Canada, including the introduction of a new workforce development initiative that will distribute 12 scholarships across four provinces.Anshul Mathur, the president of Westburne, remarked, "Our centennial is a celebration of the people and partnerships that have defined Westburne for the past 100 years. The relationships we’ve built over the past century have shaped who we are today, and they will continue to guide us as we help our customers navigate the opportunities and challenges shaping Canada’s electrical industry for the next 100 years."
The Laval event was the second stop on Westburne’s national centennial tour, following a kickoff event in Brandon, Manitoba, earlier in the summer. Established in 1926, Westburne has expanded from its initial operations in Western Canada to become one of the largest electrical supply distributors in the country, boasting over 100 branches nationwide. As the company has grown, it has adapted to meet the evolving demands of Canada’s electrical sector, supplying billions of metres of cable, enough to reach the moon and back three times, while supporting a diverse range of projects from hospitals and schools to factories, commercial developments, and critical infrastructure.
While the centennial tour is a tribute to Westburne’s historical achievements, the events also address contemporary challenges faced by the electrical industry. Across Canada’s construction, industrial, and energy sectors, customers are grappling with complex technological changes while striving to maintain productivity, enhance supply chain resilience, and meet the rising demand for skilled labour. These events create a platform for customers, supplier partners, and Westburne team members to share insights, discuss perspectives, and explore how the industry is adapting to these transformations.
For Westburne, these discussions emphasize the importance of assisting customers in navigating the transition towards electrification. Key topics include the development of EV infrastructure, the integration of energy-efficient technologies, and the implementation of automation and digital tools aimed at boosting productivity. Each stop on Westburne’s centennial tour facilitates conversations about the trends that are reshaping Canada’s electrical industry, including electrification, automation, artificial intelligence, and the growing demand for infrastructure.
These conversations also tackle practical challenges, such as enhancing productivity, improving energy efficiency, and cultivating the workforce necessary to support Canada’s future projects. As the landscape continues to evolve, so too does the role of electrical distributors. Customers increasingly seek partners who can provide more than just products; they require technical expertise, responsive service, and guidance through the complexities of modern technologies.
Building and maintaining this expertise will be contingent on attracting and nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals. The issue of workforce development has become a pressing priority across the industry. With ongoing labour shortages affecting projects nationwide, it is crucial to support students entering electrical and technical fields to ensure future demand is met. In light of these challenges, Westburne is investing in workforce development through a scholarship program that will provide 12 scholarships across Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, aimed at assisting students pursuing careers in the electrical field while strengthening the talent pipeline that communities, contractors, and industry partners rely on.
The scholarship support encompasses funding for tuition and related educational expenses, as well as experiential opportunities in automation and emerging technologies. Mathur stated, "Workforce development is one of the greatest priorities in our industry right now. As demand for skilled trades continues to grow, we all have an important role to play in attracting and supporting the next generation of talent. Our scholarship program is one way we’re investing in the future, building on a history of sharing expertise and helping develop the workforce our industry depends on."
Westburne’s centennial celebrations are set to continue in Edmonton and Mississauga in September, marking the final stops of the company’s cross-country celebration. Each event underscores a shared commitment to honoring customers, employees, and supplier partners who have contributed to the company’s growth while advancing discussions about the future of Canada’s electrical industry. For Westburne, reaching this significant milestone is not only an occasion to reflect on its past but also an opportunity to reaffirm the values that have guided the company throughout its history while continuing to support the customers, communities, and skilled trades professionals who will shape the future of Canada’s electrical industry.
