REGINA — The Rook I Project, an ambitious uranium mine and mill initiative, has officially begun construction in northwestern Saskatchewan. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by notable figures, including former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Premier Scott Moe, and Kevin O’Leary from Dragons’ Den and Shark Tank, who joined various partners and supporters to mark this significant milestone for the NexGen project. The undertaking represents a substantial investment of approximately $2.2 billion and will feature an underground mining operation, a surface milling facility, and additional support infrastructure, alongside a specialized underground tailings management facility.
Situated in the Athabasca Basin of Saskatchewan, the Rook I Project is poised to become the largest single-source uranium mine globally, boasting advanced extraction methods and safety protocols, as reported by NexGen. When fully operational, it is projected to produce up to 30 million pounds of uranium annually, which would account for over 20 percent of the current worldwide uranium fuel supply and more than 50 percent of the supply within the western world.
The initial phases of surface infrastructure development are already underway, with plans for shaft development anticipated to commence by 2027. In addition to the mining facilities, the project includes the expansion of the existing airstrip from 914 meters to a more substantial 1,780 meters, enhancing accessibility for operations and transportation.
