The global landscape of 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) is witnessing a significant transformation, characterized by the construction of taller and larger structures. Recent developments highlight the immediate benefits of this technology in the housing sector. One such project is the Waco Surf, an inland surf and water park located approximately 100 miles north of Austin, Texas. This ambitious venture aims to introduce 88 luxury homes, crafted by the renowned 3DCP builder ICON, within its expansive 90-acre Desperado residential community. These homes, which include both freestanding residences and duplexes, will be priced starting at $1.6 million, all complemented by the amenities of Waco Surf, such as a surf lagoon and a standing wave pool. Construction is slated to commence this year, with the first occupants expected to move in by 2027. The design of these homes has been meticulously developed by Firmah Architecture and Waco Surf to align with the unique requirements of the 3DCP process.In France, the 14.14-meter-high Citadel of Know-How tower in Bruay-sur-l’Escaut proudly holds the title of the tallest 3DCP structure designed for human occupancy. Luke Schock, co-president of Waco Surf, expressed the vision behind the Desperado project, stating, "We designed The Desperado around this idea of living in flow. The architecture, the land, the surf, the trails through the old-growth forest – it all fits together to give you a life where you can move between these completely different experiences in the same day."
Beyond luxury developments, 3DCP is gaining traction among municipal authorities as a viable option for delivering affordable, large-scale housing solutions. The German firm PERI 3D Construction has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of ViliaSprint², a three-storey residential building featuring 12 social housing units printed directly on-site in Bezannes, France. This structure measures 11 meters in width, 34 meters in length, and 9 meters in height, providing 350 square meters of usable space on each floor. PERI 3D touts ViliaSprint² as the largest 3D-printed apartment building in Europe, emphasizing its integration of sustainable housing features, including bio- and geo-based materials, a central heat pump, and a photovoltaic system. Notably, the construction timeline was impressively reduced from an initial 50 days to just 34 active printing days, with the assembly crew size halved from six to three.
In a parallel development, the U.S. Army has engaged ICON to construct 10 new barracks at Fort Bliss, situated near El Paso, Texas, aimed at accommodating 560 soldiers. The Army's foray into 3DCP has proven fruitful, with the first two buildings completed in July and the remaining structures expected to finish this month. The robotic printing of the walls for all ten buildings was accomplished in a mere 58 days, resulting in a cost savings of 9.3% compared to traditional military construction benchmarks set by the Army Corps of Engineers. This project showcases a dramatic acceleration in construction timelines, as it was completed four times faster than conventional methods.
The Citadel of Know-How, also notable for its height, spans 500 square meters across three floors to house the offices of Constructions 3D, the company behind its creation. The printing of this tower was remarkably completed in just ten days, utilizing a clay-based cement mixture developed in collaboration with Sika and Bollinger+Grohmann.
The engineering evolution of 3DCP continues to advance, with innovations such as the ASCEND tower crane 3D construction printer, developed by Melbourne-based Luyten. This groundbreaking technology, which incorporates AI-powered construction automation, enables the construction of buildings up to 328 feet tall within a working radius of 148 feet. Luyten asserts that the ASCEND Series is revolutionizing vertical construction, facilitating the swift and efficient building of multi-storey structures and large-scale infrastructure projects.
Industry experts, including Aarni Heiskanen of AE Partners, acknowledge that while 3DCP has surpassed the proof-of-concept phase, challenges remain in terms of certification, standardization, and scalability beyond initial showcase projects. He notes that traditional construction firms may be slow to adopt this technology unless there is a clear client demand, a standardized building type, and a supportive partner ecosystem to mitigate technical risks.
Logistical hurdles also persist, as highlighted by a study from researchers Muhammad Huzaifa Raza, Svetlana Besklubova, and Ray Y. Zhong, who point out that onsite 3DCP faces challenges related to the transportation and installation of large printing setups at construction sites. Despite these obstacles, the reduced labor demands, shorter supply chains, and high levels of automation associated with 3DCP suggest a promising trajectory toward cost-effectiveness compared to traditional construction methods as this technology continues to evolve.
